Advocate Sherman Hospital

Sheri De Shazo was placed as the president of Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Illinois. Part of the Advocate Aurora Health system, Advocate Sherman is a 255-bed, non-profit acute care hospital that has provided care to the communities of Chicago’s northwest suburbs for more than 125 years. It has been named a “Best Regional Hospital” by U.S. News & World Report and ranked highly in a number of specialties; in addition, it is Magnet-designated, a Watson Health “100 Top Hospital,” and a Modern Healthcare “Best Place to Work in Health Care,” with a regional heart center, DNV-approved Primary Stroke Center, Level II trauma center, and comprehensive cancer care center. In her role, Sheri will be accountable for directing all daily patient care operations for the hospital and affiliated outpatient service providers, as well as developing, recommending, and implementing site market and growth strategies, executing operating policies, and directing the development and implementation of tactical plans to achieve high-quality, cost-effective patient care. Serving on Advocate Aurora Health’s senior leadership team, she will work collaboratively with peer hospital presidents and system leaders to share best practices, help design and execute system strategy, and implement plans to optimize system performance.

Sheri comes to Advocate Sherman from the WakeMed health system in North Carolina, where she served as senior vice president and enterprise administrator for WakeMed North Family Health and Women’s Hospital. Responsible for the strategic planning and operational leadership of all clinical, nursing, ancillary, and support services for the hospital, she achieved system-wide Magnet Hospital designation in 2015 and Hospital Awarded LEED Gold certification in 2017. Sheri also successfully achieved two CON approvals, established an orthopedic program that generated 700 additional cases in year one, significantly grew volumes in surgical and imaging specialties, and developed the first OB hospitalist program in the region. She developed a Lean leadership culture, achieved AHRQ Culture of Safety Staff Survey results at the 95th percentile for overall perception of safety, and elevated overall management and employee engagement scores above benchmark to achieve “employer of choice.” Under Sheri’s leadership, the hospital achieved a Five-Star Professional Research Consultants Award for patient satisfaction, with HCAHPS for three major service lines at the 93rd percentile top-box rating.

Previously, Sheri served as chief clinical officer and vice president of administration for the newly constructed Piedmont Newnan Hospital in Georgia; as chief operating officer and chief nursing executive for Atrium Health Kings Mountain Hospital in North Carolina; as assistant vice president of corporate compliance for Carolinas Healthcare System; as chief operating officer for Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center’s 15-site Aegis Family Health Centers in North Carolina; and as associate director of clinical operations for Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She began her career as a charge nurse, precept, and clinic manager.

Originally from West Virginia, Sheri holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Winston-Salem State University and an MBA and master’s degree in healthcare administration from Pfeiffer University. She is Lean Six Sigma Green Belt-certified and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Sheri is active in the community, serving on the board of the local YMCA and the Chamber of Commerce, and is the parent of two daughters.
