Children’s Hospital and Medical Center

Janel Allen was placed as the chief human resources officer for Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, a 145-bed, non-profit, independent children’s hospital. CHMC is the only full-service pediatric specialty healthcare center in Nebraska, home to the only dedicated pediatric emergency department in the region and the only pediatric trauma center and Level IV regional NICU in the state. It has been recognized among U.S. News & World Report’s 2018/2019 “Best Children’s Hospitals” in five pediatric specialties, as “America’s Best Children’s Hospital” by The Women’s Choice Award, for excellence in nursing quality indicators by the American Nurses Association, and with a Gold Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and has achieved Magnet designation for nursing excellence.

In her role, Janel is responsible for designing and executing a human resource strategy and leading the development of an effective organizational structure that results in optimum service delivery and the achievement of organizational goals. She is accountable for the development and implementation of programs in the areas of compensation, benefits, talent management, the employee health clinic, succession planning, and organizational development, serving as a member of the Executive Council and as an advisor on human resource issues.

Janel comes to CHMC from Creighton University in Omaha, where she spent almost 13 years in roles of increasing responsibility, progressing from human resources manager to director of human resources and organizational development to her terminal role as chief human resources officer. Creighton is a globally recognized institution for education, research, and health care, comprised of nine schools and colleges and over 5,000 employees in 37 states and internationally. As CHRO, Janel developed a highly competent and nimble human resources team characterized by a deep customer-service orientation, performance-driven, strong morale, and the highest standards of ethics and integrity. She implemented a new capital management and payroll platform to enhance the employee experience, create more effective processes, and deliver business intelligence and analytics; led the medical physician business transformation through a merger with Catholic Health Initiatives; effected 100% growth in the university’s profit margin through evaluating alternative ways to use resources; created and executed a new approach to talent management; and designed a total rewards philosophy and strategy.

Previously, Janel served as the director of human resources at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and as a human resources specialist at Avera Health, also in Sioux Falls. She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and human resources from South Dakota State University and a master’s degree in human resources management from University of South Dakota.
