The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the professional organization representing more than 9,000 oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United States, supports its members' ability to practice their specialty through education, research, and advocacy.  AAOMS members comply with rigorous continuing education requirements and submit to periodic office evaluations, assuring the public that office procedures and personnel meet stringent national standards.

As of January 2020, AAOMS had a total membership of 11,436, including:

• 5,132 fellows/members,
• 234 provisional fellows/members,
• 247 affiliate members,
• 2,135 life fellows/members,
• 286 candidates for membership,
• 1,206 resident members,
• 935 retired fellows/members,
• 26 honorary fellows,
• 159 inactive fellows/members, and
• 1,076 allied staff members.

The mission of AAOMS is to assure excellence in patient care by advancing, promoting, and preserving the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery, and the skill and professionalism of AAOMS members

Job Description:

The executive director is responsible to the board of trustees of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and on a day-to-day basis to the executive committee, and is charged with providing continuity of direction and leadership to the members and staff of the Association as well as to the public.  This function includes assisting the board of trustees in planning and developing policies and programs, directing and supporting the staff in their implementation of such policies and programs, and representing the Association in all internal and external activities relating to the fulfillment of its policies and programs.

Professional Qualifications/Experience

• An advanced degree or equivalent relevant association/business experience
• Fifteen years of progressive experience as an association executive/senior manager at a national healthcare association
• Certified Association Executive (CAE) status or eligibility
• Direct experience working with a board of trustees
• Experience managing a staff of at least 25 and an annual budget of at least $15 million
• Experience overseeing large continuing education conferences
