Union Health System Medical Group

John Gilbreath was placed as the senior director of business services for Union Health System Medical Group in Terre Haute, Indiana, a multi-specialty group practice that has been dedicated to providing personal, comprehensive, and innovative health care to the residents of west central Indiana and east central Illinois since 1916. Part of Union Health System, the medical group has a care team comprised of more than 600 staff members, as well as 150 physicians and mid-level providers. It is an organization characterized by innovation and the pursuit of leading technology and processes, as well as by outstanding revenue cycle metrics. John is accountable for the operation of the medical group’s reporting systems, planning, directing, and coordinating all financial and management reporting functions. He provides management with timely information, analysis, and evaluations, as well as developing new systems and techniques to increase the information base for management decisions.

John brings to the position fifteen years’ experience as a chief financial officer for large medical groups, including serving as the “right-hand man” to his CEO in the creation of a financial strategic plan. John has also had extensive experience presenting to physician leadership, medical group board leadership, and health system leadership.

Before joining Union, John served as the chief financial officer of the Shannon Clinic in San Angelo, Texas, a 230-provider, non-profit, multispecialty clinic that is part of Shannon Health System. The clinic operates three urgent care centers, two rural health clinics, a sleep medicine center, and a mobile clinic, along with a full-service lab and imaging services. Annual clinic office visit encounters number approximately 400,000, with annual gross patient service revenue of approximately $220 million. In this position, John was accountable for the business office function, accounting, and purchased services. He served as a staff member of the PQRS and EMR committees, and interfaced daily with Shannon Health System senior leadership to improve processes, share information, work on special projects, and integrate the “triple aim” concept across the organization. During his tenure, John successfully opened lines of communication with physicians in order to gain their confidence, developed more formal reporting structures, and transitioned all providers to an RVU compensation model.

Previously, John served as the director of finance at Austin Heart, P.A.; as the state accounting manager for Texas Mentor; as the controller and senior director of administration for the Texas Pharmacy Association; and as the controller for the Central Texas Medical Foundation. He also worked in accounting, control, and management positions in the steel and drilling industries. John began his career as an auditor with Employers’ Insurance of Texas.

John is originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, and earned his BBA in accounting at Texas State University. Outside of work, John enjoys travel and staying active.
